There is something very interesting about road trips. An 8-hour drive seems like a struggle until you’re forced to go on a 14-hour trip multiple times. All of a sudden the 8-hour trip seems like a run to the grocery store. Can you remember that first “8-hour trip’? it was uncomfortable and took forever, but now, it’s nothing. This is the marriage road trip. Issue and challenges are ten times larger when we don’t set a clear, long-range vision for why we married in the first place.

We often set a goal to simply get along or just stay married. This kind of a vision doesn’t give us a reason for putting up with issues along the way. It leaves way too much room for us to be disappointed, even over little things.

What would happen if your vision for your marriage was more than getting along? What if your vision included how you wanted to touch your children and your grandchildren? All of a sudden, the small things, the “flat tires”, and the restroom breaks, would simply be part of the journey.

We should all have a vision for our marriages that is greater than the conflicts that we may face. Why? Because God’s vision for our marriages is bigger than what we can imagine!

God spoke to Abraham about generations that would live after him. This vision gave him and his wife Sarah the heart to endure difficulty and remain faithful. Their vision was fulfilled and God’s plan for your marriage and family can have the same reward.

Let’s keep the good news coming! That’s right. Over-emphasize what is good. This is my answer. What if those who believed in marriage became just as vocal as those who are throwing it out? We must, at least, give this next generation the option of doing things the right way.

You wouldn’t think that we would ever have to walk around telling others “marriage is a good thing” or “a great marriage is the best gift to your children”, but today, it is necessary. The popular media has repeatedly slighted parents, celebrated live-in lovers, and made traditional marriage look like a thing of the past.

There are so many who can’t name one friend with a successful marriage or family. Why should they believe in what they know nothing about? For the sake of a generation with a broken compass, we must creatively celebrate marriage and show the path to a successful household. If we don’t, our whole society will suffer.

You are the answer. The fact that you are reading this says something. You can help turn the tide by wearing one of our marriage t-shirts. Be intentional. Wear it to work, family reunions, the mall, church functions, and especially on date nights. You’ll start conversations, draw attention, and you may be the spark that gives hope to a perfect stranger.

My personal favorite is wearing my shirt that says, “I love my wife.” I love it when people realize that my wife did not make me wear it. Now, they have to contend with all of the wrong thoughts that the media filled their minds with. Marriage can work. It is the best way.

I believe this is one of them. Let me tell you why Saturday’s Eye to Eye meeting (from 5pm to 7pm at St. Paul’s, 10600 N. Council, 73162) is worth making a sacrifice to attend.

Family Vision is an organization that assists families in writing an actual vision for their households. I can’t tell you how much my heart is moved by seeing a family’s written vision on the wall of their homes. What a powerful step to make in refusing to be a family that crumbles under the weight of our culture. Now, we all know that couples don’t sit around discussing how they will make their children fail in life, but somehow it happens. The Eye to Eye community is different. We sit around thinking about how we can help our children succeed. We expose traps. We share our strategies…all of the time. When we discover something new, we share it. Why? Because, we can fail without planning, but we won’t succeed without a plan.

By writing a vision, you are setting a direction, sharing your heart with your household, giving your marriage a reason to endure hard times, and so much more. I don’t think I need to discuss the devastation of families for us to appreciate the value of tools like Family Vision.

For the last two years, my brother and I have talked about writing out a vision for our families with Family Vision. In fact, the idea of writing a family vision seemed to fit perfect with the heartbeat of Eye to Eye. We considered how great it would be to do this as one of Eye to Eye’s monthly activities. The very idea of having a written, family vision on the wall of our homes seemed to fit perfectly with what God is doing.

About four months ago, I went to a weekend leadership retreat, only to room with a close friend of Greg Gunn. Family Vision had transformed this young man’s life and family. He couldn’t talk about anything else! He absolutely loved his family and called his wife with excitement every evening. When he heard about Eye to Eye and our monthly schedule, he immediately saw how Family Vision’s tools would be a perfect addition to Eye to Eye. I could not agree more.

After my meeting with Greg Gunn, I could only thank the Lord for the great things that He is doing to restore our families. We will not be writing our visions on Saturday, but you will hear something so great about the purpose of our marriages. We have such an awesome opportunity in front of us!
